This weekend Nov 5-6 is Pumpkin Madness at the Fall Festival! Come out and see how we “recycle” old pumpkins and jack o’ lanterns. Be sure to bring in your old pumpkin that’s been sitting on the front steps since Halloween and choose how you want to see it go! You can have it dropped from the High Drop (40+ feet!), you can have it smashed under the smasher, and you can stomp them to pieces in the stomping grounds!

That’s not all Pumpkin Madness has to offer, throughout the day we will be launching pumpkins into our pond with our giant trebuchet! Visitors can also toss pumpkins at a spiked wall! On the final day, Sunday Nov 6 at 3pm, the giant 1019lb pumpkin will be dropped and smashed from the High Drop!

Pumpkin Madness also includes all of your Fall Festival favorites: 5 Giant Slides, Hayrides, Apples, Cider, Farm animals and their babies, and over 90 acres of fun!

This morning 10/21 Holly Morris from Fox morning news came out to visit the Fall Festival. Check out some of the videos. Holly Morris and Director of Operations Lucas Cox-Galhotra talk about the 2011 Fall Festival. Also featured are kids carving pumpkins with Master Pumpkin Carver Roger Holtorf. In the final video, Cox-Galhotra talks about Fields of Fear, and we learn how to make the perfect pumpkin pie with Mom’s Apple Pie owner Avis Renshaw. The segment is then wrapped up with Chef Mallory Staley (of 1749 in Georgetown) showing us how to cook pumpkin donuts!

Cox Farms Fall Festival is phenomenal and they offer something truly unique especially for kids, but also for adults!

As an adult, what I am most impressed with is the attention to detail. Either the owner or someone on staff must love wood working because there is a sign for everything! I spent most of my time wandering around thinking “that’s interesting; I wonder how they thought of that?” For instance, there are plastic bulls’ heads on the haystacks (to make them look like animals) or a large wooden painting of candy buttons, or a real mountain goat perched on an elevated ramp. The corn maze is full of surprises with a bus inside a barn with an internal vortex, and later along the path, a crooked house that you can walk through. There are a ton of options and kids can run crazy and play on and touch anything and everything!

Logistically this place is incredibly well planned out. Everything is spread out and we rarely had to wait in any lines. There are many seating areas (picnic tables, hay stacks, benches) where you can relax while the kids run around. They have plenty of food options for purchase (pizza, fries, pb&j, hotdogs, cookies, popcorn, etc, etc). They were giving out free samples of funnel cake, and cider (was soooooo delicious), and apples. There are interesting drinking fountains placed basically everywhere. They also have a station where kids cand find their parents if they get lost, and are conveniently marked by huge chairs with cute little signs. Hygiene and convenience reign supreme here. There are many, many, many hand sanitizer stations. They also have a separate baby changing section with changing tables and more hand sanitizer.

The staff is amazing! Even though we visited on an overcast day, there was still a full staff rearing to go. They had a staff person assigned to every single area of the farm to ensure safety and I could tell everyone took their job seriously. The staff was super friendly in every area of the farm. One of the kids was scared to get on the hayride, and the tractor driver hopped off of his tractor, ran over to the child and tried to give him a pep talk. So cute!

On your way out, each ticket hold gets to pick a pumpkin and at the very end of the festivities is a large outdoor general store with all kinds of pies, jams, honey, candy, toys, etc.

I left out some of the activities from this review because you can get that information from the website. I will say the slides were really cool and there were a ton of them! There was also a live band. Sometimes they sounded like karaoke but they worked really hard. I was there for three hours and they rarely took a break. I was exhausted by the end of the day so I know they must have been completely drained but they just kept on singing!

Definitely worth a trip!!

Festival Tips!

Last week we ran a contest on Facebook where our fans submitted Fall Festival Tips! Here is a list of the winners and their tips for visiting the Fall Festival!

Lisa Alvarado: The best tip I can say is to wear comfortable shoes, and bring a sweater!
Kelly Sabine: Remember that your tickets/wristbands are good all day - sometimes we go during the week in the morning with the little ones and after they nap it off go back later that afternoon for a couple hours when the big kids are out of school.
Sheri James: Pick a meeting spot (like the stage) in case you get separated and/or put your cell number on a piece of paper in their pocket (your child) to give to a Cox staff member if anyone gets lost.
Kennedy Velasco: I’d say to head out to the farm, even if it there is a potential for rain - you can still have fun even if it’s gloomy and overcast and it may only drizzle for a few minutes! An added bonus - the lines will be shorter because you’ll be braver than most!
Jen Delean: Makes for a great Friday family night out! You still get to enjoy the weekday admission. Plan to grab a pizza there for dinner, and hit all the rides (hayrides, slides, etc.)!
Nicole Acevedo: Bring a camera for all the awesome picture opportunities. Pack a lunch/ snacks for the kids, bring plenty of water.
Darlene Darden: Don’t forget the kettle corn for the hayride and really participate…makes it much easier getting past the trolls! :)
